Charge Your Electric Cars

Dec 15, 2011

The University of South Florida is charging into the future by unveiling the first electric vehicle charging stations on the Tampa campus. USF was awarded a ChargePoint America grant for two charging stations. On December 14, school officials held a demonstration and an opening ceremony for the stations.

“The charging stations are open to the public and are included as part of a network of over 100 charging stations in the Tampa Bay region, which is among the largest regional installations in the country,” said Christian Wells, Director of the USF Office of Sustainability. “This provides a significant incentive for people to use electric vehicles in our community.”

A representative from Tampa Electric brought a Chevy Volt to the event to demonstrate how electric vehicles work.

Currently, charging your vehicle is free but requires a valid parking permit. The stations are located near the Marshall Center, which is a hub for the biodiesel-fueled Bull Runner buses and also free to USF students and employees. People can leave their cars to charge and then hop on a Bull Runner to anywhere on campus and within the immediate vicinity.
